Shots Fired for iPhone, version 2.0

Short answers to the things people ask most. Everything in the app lives on your phone, so most fixes happen there too. If you're still stuck, the support page has how to reach us.

How it works

The app has the same five steps in Settings, under App tour.

  1. Add your guns. Each one tracks its own rounds and its next cleaning.
  2. Go hot. Pick a gun and a distance. The mic counts, or you tap.
  3. New distance, new session. Change gun or distance and the next session starts. Your mag carries over.
  4. Clean on time. The Locker flags the gun that's due, before you forget.
  5. See it add up. History and Goals show the months and quarters.

At the range, slide to go hot to start. Undo takes back a miscount and Reload refills the mag. When you're done, slide to cease fire, add a cost, note or photo if you like, and save.

Restoring a purchase

Pro belongs to your Apple ID, not to an account with us. On a new phone, or after reinstalling:

  1. Sign in to the App Store with the Apple ID you bought Pro with.
  2. Open Shots Fired, then Settings, then Restore purchases.
  3. You'll see “Pro restored”. This works for lifetime, yearly and monthly.

If it says “Nothing to restore”, no Pro purchase was found for the Apple ID on this phone. Check you're signed in with the right one, and that a subscription hasn't lapsed.

Restoring brings back Pro, not your log. Your firearms and sessions come back from a backup file (see below). To cancel a subscription, open your iPhone's Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Backups: export and import

There is no cloud copy of your log, so a backup file is how you move to a new phone or keep a spare. Exporting and importing are free on every plan.

Export a backup

  1. Open Settings, then Export a backup.
  2. The share sheet opens with a file named like shots-fired-backup-2026-10-17.json.
  3. Choose where it goes: Save to Files, AirDrop to your Mac, or send it to yourself.

The file goes only where you send it. It isn't encrypted, so anyone who opens it can read your firearms and sessions. Keep it somewhere private. Photos aren't included in the file, only the log.

Import a backup

  1. Put the backup file somewhere your phone can reach, such as Files or iCloud Drive.
  2. Open Settings, then Import a backup, and pick the file. On a fresh install you can also tap I have a backup to import on the first screen.
  3. The app shows what the file holds. Tap Replace data to bring it in.

Importing replaces everything on the phone with the backup. If it fails, nothing on the phone is changed. On the free plan a backup can hold one gun. If it holds more, the app offers Pro so you can bring them all across. Backups made in version 1.x import into 2.0.

The free plan and the Pro week

Every new install gets 7 days of Pro. There's no sign-up and no payment details, and nothing is charged when it ends. On day 6 a card in the Locker says Pro ends in 2 days. On day 8 the app asks once whether you want to keep Pro, and you can continue with free.

The free plan includes:

  • One gun, with unlimited sessions, counted by mic or tap
  • One goal, with reminders when it falls behind
  • Week and Month history, the month report and spend
  • Three session photos
  • Share cards, free and unlimited
  • The maintenance log, and cleaning due shown in the Locker
  • Backup export and import

What happens to things you added during the Pro week:

  • Extra guns stay in the Locker with their full history. You can look, but only the first gun you added can log new sessions.
  • Extra goals are paused, not deleted. Your first goal keeps counting.
  • Year, All and earlier months in History are Pro. Your sessions are all still there.
  • Maintenance reminders stop. Your log and schedules are kept.

Get Pro at any time and everything comes back at once. Plans and prices are on the pricing page.

Counting with the mic

With the mic on, the app listens for loud reports and counts one round each. It works best when you're the only shooter or the line is quiet. On a busy line it can't tell your shots from the lane next to you, so count by tap there. It only reads the loudness. Nothing is recorded, kept or sent anywhere.

  • Set the sensitivity. Pick Less, Medium or More on the Go hot sheet, or from Session options once you're hot. Less needs a louder report to count. More catches quieter guns, like rimfire or suppressed.
  • Each gun remembers. The distance, mode and sensitivity you last used with a gun come back next time.
  • Keep the phone close. On the bench or shelf in front of you works best. In a pocket or bag it misses shots.
  • Fast strings. Very fast strings can count two shots as one. Tap +1 round to add a missed shot, Undo to take one back, or edit the session later from History.
  • Other shooters on the line? Use tap. If a neighbour starts firing mid-session, switch to tap; it stays the same session.
  • Mic missed everything? If a session ends with no rounds, the app offers to enter the count by hand.

If you said no to the microphone earlier, turn it on in your iPhone's Settings, then Shots Fired, then Microphone.

Reminders and notifications

Reminders are scheduled on your phone by the app itself. Nothing is sent from a server, and there's no account to send it to.

  • Goal at risk (free): at 6 pm, once per goal period, when a running goal is behind pace with a week or less left.
  • Cleaning due (Pro): at 6 pm, once per cleaning cycle. Logging a cleaning starts a new cycle.
  • Scheduled maintenance (Pro): at 9 am on the due date, or at 6 pm once a round count has passed.

The app never asks for notification permission at launch. It asks after you save a maintenance schedule, after you create a goal, or the first time a gun comes due for cleaning, with a short “Remind me” or “Not now” first. Tapping a reminder opens the gun or Goals.

Not getting reminders? Open your iPhone's Settings, then Shots Fired, then Notifications, and allow them. Paused goals and guns beyond the free one don't get reminders on the free plan.

Deleting all data

  1. Export a backup first if you might want your log later.
  2. Open Settings, then Delete all data, then Delete everything.

This erases every firearm, session, goal, photo, setting and scheduled reminder on the phone. It can't be undone, and since we hold no copy, we can't bring it back either. Deleting the app also removes everything.

Deleting your data doesn't cancel a subscription, and it doesn't start a new Pro week. A purchase stays with your Apple ID, so you can restore it later.
