Why do firearm parts wear by round count, not age?

Every shot compresses the recoil spring at violent speed, slams the extractor over a rim, and cycles the striker. That energy is what wears parts - a safe queen’s springs are essentially new at ten years old, while a competition gun can shoot its recoil spring soft in a single season. So replacement schedules are written in rounds, and they only work if you actually know your count.

One caveat before the table: these are common-practice ranges shooters use when the manufacturer is silent. Several makers publish exact intervals for their guns - if yours does, that number overrides everything below.

When should you replace firearm springs and wear parts?

By part: full-size recoil springs every 3,000 - 5,000 rounds, compact recoil springs every 2,000 - 3,000, magazine and striker springs on symptoms, and AR gas rings, extractor springs, and O-rings checked around every 5,000. What are the signs a spring or part is worn out?

Five symptoms mean a part needs attention now, whatever the count says: sluggish return to battery, a changed ejection pattern, light primer strikes, feeding failures that follow one magazine, and sharper felt recoil. Round counts are the plan; the gun always gets a vote.

1. Sluggish return to battery

The slide creeps home or needs a nudge to close on a round. That’s recoil spring fatigue (or a filthy gun - clean first, then judge). On a carry gun this symptom means the spring gets replaced today, not at the next milestone.

2. Ejection pattern changes

A gun that used to throw brass consistently and now dribbles it, rings your head, or switches directions is telling you about extractor tension or recoil spring health. Pattern change matters more than any absolute distance.

3. Light primer strikes

Shallow dents on primers that fire fine elsewhere point at the striker or hammer spring - or fouling in the striker channel. Either way it’s a stop-shooting-and-fix item, because the next click might come when it matters.

4. Feeding failures that follow one magazine

Nose-dives and failures to feed that travel with a specific mag are a magazine spring or follower problem, not a gun problem. Number your magazines - it’s the only way this pattern becomes visible.

5. Sharper felt recoil

When a familiar gun starts feeling snappier, the recoil spring may no longer be soaking up slide energy. Shooters usually notice this one late - which is exactly why the round-count schedule exists.

Do carry guns and range guns need different schedules?

The same spring gets two different policies. On a range gun, running to the far end of the interval - or even to first symptoms - costs you a frustrating range day. On a carry gun, common practice is to replace at the early end of the interval and to treat any symptom as disqualifying until fixed. Springs cost a few dollars; that’s cheap insurance on a gun whose one job is to work.

How do you know how many rounds are on each part?

“Replace at 3,000 rounds” is useless if your honest answer to rounds on this spring is a shrug. Does dry fire count toward these round counts?
